The Spring 2024 Megabucks Amateur Pool League (MAPL) playoffs will be remembered for one thing: Steve Hill’s triumphant rise from a season of struggles to the champion’s circle. In an exclusive interview, Hill reflected on his journey, providing an inside look at the grit, determination, and a touch of luck that fueled his incredible run.
A Rocky Start to the Season
Hill, who has been a part of the league since 2016, didn’t mince words about his performance during the Spring 2024 regular session.
“I struggled a lot this season,” Hill admitted. “I really played bad. There were matches I wish I could take back. It was tough, but I kept reminding myself to push through.”
One of Hill’s lingering regrets was missing a matchup with John Kerbawy, widely regarded as the league’s top player. “I wanted that challenge. He’s a legend in our league, and I was curious to see how I would measure up,” Hill said.
Instead, Hill turned his attention to reflecting on his other opponents, including Del Chesnut, who had defeated him earlier in the session. “Del’s a formidable opponent, and I hoped for a chance to redeem myself if I made it to the playoffs,” Hill said.
The Playoff Gauntlet
Hill’s playoff campaign kicked off with a nail-biting first-round match against EZ Laster. Despite trailing 6-3, Hill mounted an extraordinary comeback to win 9-8.
“I felt confident going in, but when I was down, I started doubting myself,” Hill recalled. “But then something clicked. I just stayed focused, one rack at a time.”
In the second round, Hill received a forfeit win against Stephanie Melgar. While it advanced him to the next stage, Hill expressed disappointment in not getting a rematch. “I had lost to her during the regular session, and I was looking forward to another chance to play her. She’s a tough competitor, and I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” he said.
The third round saw Hill face Jingqiu “John” Jiang, a player who had handed him a devastating 9-4 loss in 8-ball earlier in the session. This time, in a tense 10-ball matchup, Hill edged out a narrow 8-7 victory.
“I was really nervous going into that match,” Hill admitted. “I wasn’t sure what would happen, but I kept telling myself to play my game. Winning that match was a huge confidence boost.”
The Championship Showdown
The finals brought Hill face-to-face with his earlier nemesis, Del Chesnut. The match was intense, with the players trading racks early on. Hill broke through with a streak of four consecutive wins, giving him a decisive edge.
“It wasn’t easy,” Hill said. “Del is a fantastic player, and every rack felt like a battle. Closing out the match was nerve-racking. I could feel the pressure, but I also knew I had to keep my focus.”
In the end, Hill sealed the championship with a 9-6 victory, a moment he described as both thrilling and surreal. “When that last ball dropped, it was a mix of relief, pride, and joy,” Hill said. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”
A Champion’s Reflection
Looking back on his journey, Hill credited his resilience and the support of his fellow league members. “This league has been my home since 2016, and it’s been an incredible journey,” he said. “This win means everything to me, especially after the tough season I had. It’s proof that perseverance pays off.”
For Hill, the Spring 2024 MAPL playoffs were more than just a competition, they were a testament to the power of determination and a reminder that redemption is always within reach.
As the lights dimmed on the Spring 2024 season, one thing was clear: Steve Hill’s story will be a cornerstone of MAPL history for years to come.
